Find the beauty in the weather

                                I'm finding that I'm getting annoyed at the "meteorologists" who are
                "reporting " our weather. These people are behaving as if they are drop-outs from
                drama school who will say and do anything to become "celebrities". The result is
                they turn everything into a major disaster and we are teaching our population,
                especially our children,  to be terrified  of the environment they live in..........I've
                lived many years through Northeast winters, summers, springs, and falls.....I've lost
                my home in a hurricane........But I'm still capable of finding the beauty in the world
                around me.    
                               Please look for it....in the snowfall that keeps the plants well;  in the winds
                that prune the trees...you get the idea...it is there, waiting to be seen. And if you find
                yourself getting stale, as I do occasionally, come participate in one of my workshops
                where you may learn a little about beauty and have a little fun.

                        If you are feeling like you need something different to do, and
             you have a collection of  "stuff" or you have always wanted to create "Found
             Object " Sculpture, you may like to join one of my workshops. Plan a lovely
             weekend in the charming Hudson valley town of Saugerties.... Spend a day
             at one of my workshops learning, with personal instruction, to build your own
             personal sculpture, and the next day , enjoy the many offerings that are in this
             remarkable area.
                      Workshops are limited to three people to give my personal attention to you
            and your work. Spring dates are now available ; week days or weekends. Groups
            are limited to three people; instruction from 9:30am to 3:30 pm.

   We do have a good time together creating some creative pieces of found object
     sculpture.   I work with people who have had no experience as well as those who are
     interested in learning a new technique.

Announcement of "Where Next?" a studio biography

                          Since the middle of October 2014, I have been writing the history of
          my studio(s) of 50+ years.
                          Read the comments and discussion from my husband, my three "Friends"
         and of course, myself, about the life in the studio.
                          Read all about the fence and sidewalk art shows of the 1960's and 1970's,
          our move to California, the hurricane in Connecticut that destroyed one studio, the
          National Sculpture Society prize, among others, the shows in Europe, my theories
          and practice of making Found Object sculpture, and last, but certainly not least,
          a description of my newest studio, where I'm creating new sculpture as well as holding
          workshops that the participants have found inspiring as well as entertaining.
                          The book will contain images of the studios as well as a portfolio containing
          both early and late work of the five mediums I work in:
                          Drawings: a whole section of my beautiful cats in pen & ink, as well as
                                            drawings from my garden.
                          Oil Paintings: more colorful cats, as well as large canvases of my "Tapestry
                                            of my Mind" series and other abstracts.
                          Reverse Oil Painting on Glass: images of small, jewel-like abstracts on glass.
                          Found Object Assemblage: Images of prize- winning sculpture, including my
                                            method of using rag paper; which have become the main focus of
                                            my studio, and the first subject of the workshops I hold.
                          The Tapestry of My Mind Series: Begun with painting, it has evolved into
                                            stunning fiber tapestries with found objects....called "brilliant" in
                                            a recent review, around which I am creating a new workshop
                                            offering.
                  All of this will be in a lovely book of 80 +  pages - I am in the process of preparing it
        for the printers now and will have will have information for you to reserve your copy at

Comments on the January 24 Workshop

                     I just received an email from Julie and Rob, the participants in the Found-Object      Assemblage Workshop held on January 24th. Julie has a great blog and has written about the day we all spent in my studio. They both created work that in the time given was exceptional, and I'm delighted to see and hear the way they used my direction. Here is Julie's Blog......

The January 24th Found Object Workshop

                     After a lovely, gentle snowfall the night before, the two participants in my
         January Found Object Assemblage Workshop, Julie and Rob, arrived at my studio
         Saturday morning. We brought their materials to the studio, and then I showed them
         a selection of sculptures of my creation that used many of the methods of joinery and
         design that they might find useful in creating their own pieces. And then we began.

         They each had brought a large selection of found objects to choose from, but were able
      to narrow the choices quickly and decide on the direction each would take. I was delighted
      to see that they let their individual personalities show strongly in the materials they chose ;
      Julie was interested in using many small parts that echoed each other forming a repetitive
      theme, while Rob chose to use large bolder shapes. The morning passed quickly; They both
      had questions about design, materials and tools,and the philosophy behind Found Object
      Sculpture and my ideas on how to create it, so I was having a wonderful time answering
      their questions and showing them where to apply the methods.

     
             At the end of the workshop, we all were satisfied with what had been accomplished:
    Two very well designed and thought out pieces of Found Object Assemblage. Rob and Julie
    have taken their work home and will put final touches to the work and will send me photos
   of the finished sculptures for a final consultation. I think they have found, with my help, a way
    to enjoy their collection of found pieces.

Fay Wood receives Special International Recognition

             I've just received a notice  that two of my artworks - "Cityscape of My Mind"
   and  "Storm I" have won the Special Recognition awards given by Juror Laurence Bradshaw,
   Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the "17th Annual All Media Juried
   Online International Exhibition." This  Exhibition  is hosted by the Upstream People Gallery
   of Omaha, Nebraska and will run for the month of January, and then can be found in their

                     I just received notification that my work in the tapestry series has been accepted in the on-line exhibition "17th  Annual All Media Juried Online International Art Exhibition" with the Upstream People Gallery (www.UpstreamPeopleGallery.com) and will open January 1st.

 I also have shown my work at  Spectrum in Miami, Florida  with Artifact Gallery, N.Y.C. and will show with the gallery at Artexpo in N.Y.C.  in 2015.

               These are some of the new and older pieces of work at my studio. In January, when the holidays are over and we are all thinking of something to do, I will be offering several workshops
at my studio.....one in found object assemblage, one in tapestry with or without found objects,

New info about Facebook Page

                 Unhappily, the last post  was not to be. The Facebook page I posted was made into a commercial page by Facebook without my knowledge or understanding  and I could not afford the daily fees they were charging. So ,I promptly deleted all the Pages. I will post the Photos here for anyone interested in seeing the new and old work I have in my Studio. The exhibition of my work at Kaplan Hall,  SUNY - Newburgh will be ending on the 28th of October.  The next post will inform you of what I am planning for the next exhibitions; and you can always see my work at the studio.

The new studio

               Well,we have done it!!!  The studio and our living space have been moved successfully........about 7 miles from the Clove Church Studio  into a lovely house in the middle of Saugerties, NY.....a great village in the Hudson Valley.
               The studio is now open...by appointment,  or,  please stop by and visit on Sunday afternoons from 12 -4 pm . See my new work, and some old favorites in new surroundings.
              There are three separate studio spaces.....Sculpture, painting, and drawing...the space is intimate, with excellent light. I'm interested in seeing how and if  my work will change because of the wonderful light and separate areas for working. Come and see......and while you are here, sign up for a workshop or private lessons in one of the five techniques I have mastered ; Drawing, Reverse Oil Painting on Glass , Oil Painting, Found Object Assemblage, and Tapestry with Found Objects. I can inspire you .

update after a long hiatus

           The season's greetings, and a happy, peaceful new year..........We have had a very eventful and productive year..... last spring I was invited to join with the membership & past members of the Tivoli  (NY)
Artists coop to celebrate their 20th anniversary with an exhibition of work.  They have a lovely  Gallery
and the show was of very high quality, indeed!
            Next, a fellow sculptor invited me to exhibit my work with a group of very fine sculptors at SUNY
Orange (a part of the State University  of NY). It was a lovely show, and as a part of it , I was asked to give a Master Class on Found Object Sculpture, which was attended by about 25 lively and interested people.
            Also, a group of  Artists (me included) were invited to show  our work at the Atlantic Gallery in
Chelsea in Manhattan; there were a number of events scheduled during the show and it was well attended.
            And to round off the year of exhibitions, I was invited to show some experiments I have been making with fiber and found objects with a group of fiber artists in Albany, NY . At the same time , I've been offering  workshops in several mediums, and holding open studios for the public.
           All in all, things have been busy..........but recently they have gotten busier. In September ,we
bought  a 1903 Edwardian period style house in the village of Saugerties, NY, where we have lived for 20
years in a church.  My new studio is almost completed, and we have put the church up for sale. It has been a remarkable place to live and work and we are looking for someone with enthusiasm and imagination to
see the possibilities they will have in both the property and the surrounding area of the Hudson Valley.

Classes Now Forming

              Clove Church Studio is now offering workshops  for adults on FOUND OBJECT ASSEMBLAGE.   The groups will meet at the studio in Saugerties ,NY. They will be limited to three people
per session to assure personal attention by sculptor FAY WOOD, who will lead the workshop.
              While at the studio, you will  be introduced to the sculpture that Wood has gained an international reputation by creating, and you will be shown the inspired ways she has used to produce a large body of work.   Creating with your own found artifacts and learning the thinking behind the composing of a piece of sculpture  will be the basis of the workshop.
             Beginning at 9am and continuing to 4pm ( with lunch included, ) the workshop will also offer an
individual one-hour consultation on the completed work.  Gift certificates are available ; the cost of the workshop is 200.00 (U.S.)
            Saugerties is  a lovely vacation area on the Hudson River in New York State; we have ample
accomodations  ranging from B&B's , motels, camping, and a new five star hotel in town.....we are the
 home of HITS Horse Shows in the Sun, Opus 40 , many hiking trails , skiing nearby, and last but not least, many Artist's Studios open to the public year round .Ask us to help you to organize a holiday.

              "Arrange whatever pieces come your way"       Virginia Woolf

                            Fay Wood will be holding several Workshops for adults in her studio/gallery in 
the coming year. The Found Object Assemblage  session will be a basic workshop showing methods used
in her work and the design possibilities found in hands-on application using materials found by the student.
Seeing, talking, and thinking about the application and inspiration gained from looking at the many examples
of Wood's work in the studio is a major part of the workshop.We will be developing a lively sense of 
movement, color, texture, and a sense of space in a small piece of work. 
Also included will be a one hour consultation on your finished work at a mutually agreed time.

                            The workshop will be held  January 12, 2013- from 9am to 4pm . We will have 
an hour for lunch ,(included in the cost ) during which we will look at the work and have a general discussion
about what has been accomplished.
                            A second workshop will be held  on January 19, if places on the 12th have been filled.
The sessions are limited to three (3) people. Workshops may be arranged for weekdays,also.  The cost
for the day is $200.oo  per person, patable in advance .  To reserve your space, send a query to:

                 UPDATE ON THE NOVEMBER FOUND OBJECT ASSEMBLAGE
                                                       WORKSHOP
                      The workshop began promptly at 9a.m. with a good deal of enthusiasm.
       We all had a very productive day and the attendees created two pieces of very      
        competent ,attractive work using the materials they had collected. There  were
        discussions,questions , and philosophy going on all day. Here are the comments
        sent to me after the class;

                     "  My friend and I took the 7 hour Found Object Assemblage Workshop
         on Sunday, 11/18/12. As a novice sculptor, I was a bit intimidated, but, soon became
        comfortable and relaxed as Fay walked around and respectfully offered up suggestions
        and solutions.  I found this class to provide just the right balance of teacher instruction
        and, the unearthing of my own sensibilities when designing  and constructing my 
        piece. During this class, I developed a sense of style, of trust and confidence, that was 
        not there prior to the class. I loved the processes of collecting  my found objects...
        of discovery and tapping into my creative self....and then seeing my product.
        Simply stated,being inside the Clove Church Studio space was awe-inspiring;
        and then ...seeing my hands , working alongside Fay's hands...an honor."

                     I sincerely hope that I can produce this result in all the workshops 
        that are held in my studio. Here is the second response:
